What a time to be alive.
I know a lot of photographers and filmmakers staying away from the subject, but I can’t. This is such a monumental moment in our history. I just put out a video documenting Saint Augustine at https://youtu.be/HHYgZgp2CX4
I sit at home and often feel like the apocalypse is outside. I feel a lot of people think this way. It has been inspiring more black and white photography.
If you go outside, you realize there’s a ton of life everywhere. I can hear the birds chirping from my open window. Down here in Florida, we aren’t on full lockdown, so there are increasing numbers of bicycle riders. People walk around their neighborhoods. It reminds me of the Pokemon Go summer or even a bit like Spain.
Numbers are dwindling, and rightfully they should. We need to nip this pandemic soon. When I do see people, they seem lost. Many people who are homeless don’t have anywhere to go. They sit and wait it out. I’m incredibly concerned for them and see the government doing nothing about it.
Other people I see wander the streets lost. Confused looks on their faces. I’m not sure what they’re searching for. The shops downtown are all closed.
Something that really surprises me is the increase of photographers in downtown Saint Augustine doing portraits. They’re using the empty streets to produce new work for clients. I’m impressed with the notion, with the decline of photographic jobs. I just hope they’re taking the correct measures for safety.
